Brazilian Studies

In 2008 the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) inaugurateda new Brazilian Studies Program to consolidate our numerous resources that promote scholarship on Brazil. As part of this effort to recognize the importance of Brazilian culture, history and language, the Center for Latin American Studies has pursued different venues for advancing Brazilian Studies at the University of Chicago in both the Social Sciences and the Humanities.

These efforts have materialized in different ways, ranging from the Brazil Working Group which brings together faculty from across the university who study Brazil, to the new minor that has been approved by the College in Brazilian Portuguese. Students from the University of Chicago have also been receipients of different grants such as FLAS, FLAD and DDRA that allow them to study different aspects of Brazil on campus and in the field.

CLAS has a long tradition of bringing visiting faculty from Brazil, organizing workshops and conferences and offering courses that advance our knowledge of the country.

The Center also sponsors a mailing list for the anthropology of/in Brazil, with over 800 subscribers in the U.S., Brazil, and Europe. To subscribe, please  click here.
