Spanish & Portuguese

At the University of Chicago, language acquisition courses in Spanish and Portuguese are administered through the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures during the academic year and the Summer Language Institute during the summer. CLAS  supports additional curricular enrichment activities for Portuguese, such as the Illinois Portuguese Language Connection, which connects UChicago students to their peers at the Univeristy of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University.

Less Commonly Taught Languages of Latin America

CLAS works with graduate students pursuing the less commonly taught languages of the region to recommend shared courses and summer options for Aymara, Haitian Creole, Mayan languages (including K'iche', Q'eqchi', and Yucatec), Nahuatl, and Quechua.

Financial Aid for Language Study

Students from outside the University of Chicago who are interested in studying any of these languages are encouraged to explore possibilities for enrollment and funding at their home institutions as well as the financial aid offered by the Summer Language Institute.
